Steps to obtain an insurance-covered breast pump

Congratulations and thank you for considering Ridgeview Home Medical Equipment to assist you in acquiring your breast pump.

  1. Please contact your insurance company as soon as possible to ask what kind of breast pump is covered under your plan and where you are required to obtain your pump.
  2. If this is your first contact with your insurance regarding your breast pump, read the following bold, underlined statement to them when you call. This will ask the most pertinent information you will need from your insurance company. “Does my insurance cover a standard electric breast pump coded E0603 and is Ridgeview Home Medical Equipment in my provider’s network?”
  3. If you have determined you have coverage for an E0603 and that Ridgeview Home Medical Equipment is in your provider’s network, the pumps we offer include the Medela Pump in Style® MaxFlowTM (insurance-exclusive pump) and the Spectra® S2 (pink pump). For an upcharge, we also carry the Spectra® S1 Plus (blue pump with a battery) and the Medela Freestyle FlexTM (with a battery).
  4. Once you know the above information and have decided on which pump you would like, please contact our Home Medical Representative at 952-442-2283 between 9 a.m. – 3 p.m., Monday through Friday. They will deliver your chosen pump to your hospital room. If it is during a weekend, please speak with your nurse or lactation consultant to obtain your pump. When you order your pump, you may also order additional breastfeeding supplies such as extra breast pump parts, nipple cream and the My Brest Friend pillow. These additional items are paid for out-of-pocket with a credit card.
  5. If your insurance coverage allows you to acquire your pump through Ridgeview, we will bill your insurance company directly. However, depending on your deductible, you may have out-of-pocket expenses that remain.
  6. If you determine that your pump must be obtained outside of Ridgeview, you may need to request a written prescription from your doctor for a “double electric pump” prior to discharge.
  7. If you wish to obtain your breast pump prior to delivery, take the breast pump prescription order form to your next prenatal appointment to have your provider sign and return via fax (952-241-1342) or email (hme@ridgeviewmedical.org) to Ridgeview Home Medical Equipment. HME staff will contact you to schedule delivery or pick-up arrangements for the pump.
  8. Ridgeview Home Medical Equipment also has hospital grade breast pumps for rental available after delivery. Should that need arise, please discuss rental options with the lactation consultant.

Your nurses and lactation consultants can assist you with answering any additional questions you may have. Congratulations on this new journey!
