Randy's Story

High school sweethearts since their senior prom, Dana Young knew her reserved, even keeled boyfriend was the one. Now married for over 25 years, Randy and Dana easily balanced their fast-paced household with two children and his successful high-stress career all while enjoying their life full of friends, sports and travel.

Dana did not know that deep down Randy was struggling. The fast-paced lifestyle meant Randy did not address the emotions that jeopardized his mental health. For years, Randy’s struggle with anxiety and depression hid behind an overbooked social calendar, family priorities and work deadlines. In their Ice Castle on Super Bowl Sunday 2020, all the anxiety and depression Randy bottled up for years came to a climax. Curled up in a ball in their Ice Castle, Randy had a mental breakdown and told Dana he needed help.

Randy’s story is not unique. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, more than 37% of Minnesota adults report symptoms of anxiety and depression. In Carver County, one of the largest counties in the Ridgeview service area, nearly 4,000 adults need mental health services; however, most people in our service area do not have access to mental healthcare.

In response to the significant mental healthcare gap that exists in the counties we serve, Ridgeview initiated the development of a robust mental health program intended to benefit all residents in our seven-county service area. Phase 2 of the Ridgeview Foundation’s Cause for the Community Campaign aims to secure funds needed to provide our community with increased access to coordinated, comprehensive, and holistic mental health care close to home. We aim to help improve the health and social well-being of residents in our service area by:

  • Increasing access to mental health services, therapies, treatments and programs.
  • Providing coordinated, holistic and comprehensive mental healthcare.
  • Eliminating long waits for consultations and treatment.
  • Decreasing long-distance transfers to appropriate care.
  • Improving lives through the provision of comprehensive care close to home.

Soon, residents like Randy Young will be able to access all the resources that they need to regain their mental health close to home.
