BLU-U® Blue Light Photodynamic Therapy

BLU-U® Blue Light Photodynamic Therapy is an in-office light treatment to treat precancerous sun spots, which are called actinic keratoses (AKs). Actinic keratoses are the rough, dry, scaly spots on your skin that are caused from sun exposure. Actinic keratoses are precancers that have the potential to turn into a squamous cell carcinoma, the second most common type of skin cancer.

The Levulan Blue Light PDT is a way to treat a large surface area of your skin, with just a few days of down time. A topical medication called Levulan (5-aminolevulinic acid or ALA) is applied to your skin and is then activated using the BLU-U light treatment. This treatment is often repeated two or three times, with treatments about one month apart.
