Disclosure of Hospital Charges – MN Statute 144.591
Minnesota Legislature passed a law in 2019 that requires hospitals to provide, within 30 days of discharge, an itemized description of billed charges for medical services and goods the patient received during the hospital stay. The law does not apply to patients enrolled in Medicare, Medical Assistance, the MinnesotaCare program or those who received healthcare coverage through an employer self-insured health ERISA plan. Patients covered under Medicare Advantage plans are also exempt from this mandate. This law came into effect on January 1, 2021.
Please note:
- The itemized statement is not a bill and should not be viewed as an invoice with the expectations of payment.
